HOW PSYCHOTHERAPY HELPS
Psychotherapy can be a powerful instrument of change. Through this process we will gain a deeper understanding of who you are by exploring your ways of relating to the people and world around you. The increased self-awareness and understanding that develops will help you repair old wounds, build on your strengths and coping skills, better meet your needs, and increase your self-esteem.
An element that is unique to couples and family therapy is the focus on the relationship(s), and the interactions that are causing intense conflicts and distress. Patterns of responding to each other develop over time that may become problematic. Couples and family therapy often entails learning to be attuned to these patterns and triggers that interfere with the relationship. The deeper understanding that develops nurtures compassion, intimacy and closeness, enabling each partner, or family member, to communicate more effectively and in ways that better meet each other’s needs.
In play therapy for children, the use of art, drama, toys, and language enables children to better communicate their internal struggles, and learn more effective tools to cope with their distress. Children experience and demonstrate distress in a variety of ways, such as through ongoing difficulties at school or home, conflicts with peers, behavioral problems, and persistent displays of depression and/or anxiety. An essential component of the work with children includes ongoing meetings with parents and/or caregivers, which offer a space for parents/caregivers to discuss concerns, and gain a better understanding of how to support their child.
